Bradley
Bradley is to the west of the River Colne at the end of the Colne Valley and south of the River Calder.
Bradley expanded rapidly as a residential area and with new business sites in the mid to late 20th century.
It has housing built as a model early council estate with wide grass verges and also estates of modern housing, Victorian homes and parts of the original village of Bradley.
The area has large industrial units, small business and office parks, a farm shop and farmland used for grazing cattle, sports fields, woods, a waste tip, a municipal golf course and Kirklees Council's horticultural nursery.
Bradley's original Anglican Church, built in 1863, is in Station Road, Bradley, the road leading to the village station which closed in 1950. The old church building has been used as gymnasium since 1979 and is the home of the Greenhead Gymnastics Club.
The present St Thomas' Church is a multifunctional building built in 1974 in St Thomas Gardens, off Bradley Road.
Bradley Wood is the location of a Scout campsite, although the wood was dissected from Bradley by the opening of the M62 in 1970 and can now only be reached from Bradley by footbridge. Road access is from the Brighouse end of Shepherds Thorn Lane.
Bradley used to have a hospital, which was known as Bradley Wood Sanitorium through much of its life from 1917 to 1978. For many years it accommodated tuberculosis patients. The hospital was in the area surrounded by Screamer Wood, Dyson Wood and Bradley Gate Wood. Like several other hospitals in the Huddersfield area it was closed so that its site could be used for housing development.
