Second chance to comment on latest Cultural Heart proposals September 14, 2022
The plans show how Kirklees Council would develop the area around the Princess Alexandra Walk Piazza and Library.
After earlier consultation, they are changed from the original plans in the 10-year Huddersfield Blueprint scheme launched three years ago.
The plans include a new library built in place of part of the Market Hall building, which would also be partly-demolished to create a new public square in front of the present library and Peel Street side of Huddersfield Town Hall.
The present library and art gallery building would become a museum with an extension at the rear of the present building.
A new art gallery building would replace shops between the grass of the Piazza and pavement of Queen Street. It would face the side of the present library and at the rear it would look directly on to the Georgian buildings of Queen Street. The gallery would also be just across the top of new shallower steps to Queensgate from the new library. The steps follow the alignment of Ramsden Street and a lift would provide level access.
The plans show the buildings formerly occupied by Bhs and still by WHSmith and that occupied by Boots, at either side of The Shambles, removed and replaced with a town park linking from King Street to the new public square.
A 2,200-capacity events venue and new multi-storey car park would occupy the former multi-storey car park site.
The Grade II-listed main part of the Market Hall, with its unique, airy roof design and sculpture panels alongside Queensgate, is retained and earmarked as a food hall and social dining area.
A new block, shown in the original Blueprint, which obscured the side of the present library building, is not part of the new design.
