Flockton
Barnsley Road, FlocktonSt James the Great Church, FlocktonFlockton Green ClubSun Inn, FlocktonFlockton is a small former mining village and now mostly a residential village 6 miles east-south-east of Huddersfield and a similar distance south-west of Wakefield.
The village is surrounded by agricultural land and has views towards the TV mast at Emley Moor, Britain's tallest free-standing structure, a couple of miles away.
The village stretches for over a mile along the busy A637 Barnsley Road. It is a narrow road in places but carries a lot of traffic as if forms the most direct route from Huddersfield to the M1 motorway. Calls for a short bypass to take traffic away from the village have been made since the 1970s but it has never been created and the village has continued to experience a high number of vehicles passing through mitigated only by traffic calming chicanes, a reduced speed limit and a ban on heavy lorries.
At the heart of the village is St James the Great Church. The present building, dating from 1869 and grade II listed, has been altered to provide a community space. The village also had a Zion United Reformed Church, also grade II listed and dating from 1802. This church, also off Barnsley Road, was closed and put on the property market a few years ago. An old Methodist chapel in Barnsley Road, dating from 1841, has been converted to a house.
FlocktonThe former Caphouse Colliery at Overton is just over one mile to the north east of Flockton and is now home to the National Coal Mining Museum for England.
Just to the east of Flockton is New Hall Prison, an adult women's prison which also accommodates young offenders and juveniles on detention and training orders.
To the west of the village, Flockton Moor is a small hamlet and moor about two miles along rural lanes from Flockton itself.
