Hepworth
Hepworth from aboveButcher's Arms and Towngate, HepworthHoly Trinity Church, HepworthTowngate, HepworthHepworth Village HallHepworth is a village about 6 miles south of Huddersfield town centre (7.5 miles by road) and 1.5 miles south-east of Holmfirth.
It is situated on the hillside above the valley of Rakes Dike, which becomes Jackson Bridge Dike and New Mill Dike before flowing into the River Holme.
The rural village has a narrow main street which can be reached by winding country lanes which were clearly set in their course in days before the traffic of the village's recent housing expansion.
Hepworth has a strong sense of community, reflected in the activities in its village hall, its football team and its own brass band.
A brass band was formed in the village in 1882 and has won a string of prestigious prizes over the years.
A regular event in the village is Hepworth Feast, a procession from the village which is held on the last Monday of June each year. The event is said to have had its origins as a thanksgiving for the cessation of the 1665 plague which claimed many lives in Hepworth.
Hepworth grew as a farming community and woollen textiles also played a very important part in village life for many years. Dobroyd Mills, a large textile mill between Hepworth and neighbouring Jackson Bridge had origins dating back to 1829. Recently there has been clearance of the mill site for major redevelopment proposals including new housing.
