Linthwaite

LinthwaiteHuddersfield Narrow Canal, LinthwaiteMethodist Church and School, Clough, LinthwaiteTitanic Mill, LinthwaiteLinthwaite is a village in the Colne Valley 3 miles west-south-west of Huddersfield town centre, between Milnsbridge and Slaithwaite.

The village stretches for about 1.5 miles along the A62 Manchester Road and for a steep half-mile or so up the southern side of the valley to its prominent church.

The coming of churches, large textile mills and dyeworks to this part of the Colne Valley in the 19th century brought about an expansion of several hamlets which merged into today's Linthwaite, with some remaining gaps filled with housing in more recent times.

Christ Church Linthwaite was built on land high on the hillside at Broad Oak.

Methodists placed their church and built a school at Clough, near to where Black Rock Mills were also built.

Other mills had been built near the valley floor or Manchester Road. The large Spring Grove Mill was at Hoyle House and the Hoyle Ing Dyeworks was built just below Royd House.

LinthwaiteLinthwaiteRiver Colne, LinthwaiteLinthwaiteTitanic Mill in Low Westwood Lane did not arrive until 1911, the year the liner sank. The Linthwaite mill still survives, having been splendidly reused for apartments, a spa and leisure club.

A large part of Spring Grove Mills, behind Reliance Garage, has also been reused, housing several businesses as the Colne Valley Business Park.

Other mills still await new uses, while much of the Black Rock Mills site has been cleared for a housing development.

While there is no longer the textile-focused trade Linthwaite once had, there are still many businesses in the village. The largest of these is pharmaceuticals manufacturer Thornton and Ross, founded in 1922. It is now part of a European group, producing many leading brands and exports to more than 80 countries worldwide.
