Longley with Lowerhouses
The area also includes Lowerhouses. Because of the way the area evolved neither Longley or Lowerhouses appear today to have any distinct boundary and the names sometimes become interchanged beyond the area of their historic origins.
Longley includes what was once the estate of the Ramsden family, who bought the Manor of Huddersfield in 1599 and later the Manor of Almondbury. The family owned and built much of Huddersfield before selling the land to Huddersfield Corporation in 1920.
Longley Old Hall, a grade II listed building faces towards Castle Hill from Longley. Originally dating from the 14th century, it has stone walls from the late 16th century and Victorian alterations. It became the Ramsden family home through marriage in the mid-16th century and remained within the Ramsden family until 1976.
A new Longley Hall was completed in 1870 on a lower part of the estate, off Dog Kennel Bank. This was part of the sale to the Corporation and became a girls' school in 1924. In 1959 a special school was established there. New buildings have been added to the site while the school still uses the old hall as part of its premises.
Maps from the 19th century show that a little down the hill from Longley Old Hall and surrounding houses at Longley was the hamlet of Lower Houses, effectively Longley's lower houses. Later the new Longley Hall was built on part of the estate below these lower houses while the largest growth in new housing came around the Lower Houses hamlet, including, in the early 20th century, a social housing estate which took the Lowerhouses name. Lowerhouses Lane passes through the area, sandwiched between Longley Road and Longley Lane. As such there is little distinction in the boundaries of Longley and Lowerhouses.
