It is a busy local shopping and commercial centre situated around a bridge over the River Colne.
The Huddersfield Narrow Canal and A62 Manchester Road pass through Milnsbridge just south of the village centre.
Market Street, MilnsbridgeMilnsbridge HouseWhile not having a vast residential area, the village centre does provides a wide range of services for residents travelling to and from home addresses in neighbouring villages and districts, including Cowlersley, Longwood and parts of Golcar. Milnsbridge also has many industrial and warehouse premises.
Longwood Viaduct carrying the main trans-Pennine railway line along the Colne Valley is a dominant feature of the village. However, Milnsbridge and Longwood station closed back in 1968 as a result of cuts in some of the stations along the line, which also once had four tracks but now has only two.
A listed building in Milnsbridge is older than both the canal and the railway. Milnsbridge House was once a fine Georgian country house, built in the latter part of the 1700s with extensive gardens. In the 1800s, the gardens with a large fish pond, became Milnsbridge Pleasure Grounds, but they would ultimately become consumed by the industrial expansion of the area. Milnsbridge House survives but shows little of its former splendour having itself been put to industrial use for more than 100 years.
Harold Wilson, who was Prime Minister from 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to 1976 and later Baron Wilson of Rievaulx, attended primary school in Milnsbridge having been born in nearby Cowlersley.
