Primrose Hill
The village grew in the Victorian era, at that time providing housing for workers at the many nearby local woollen mills in Huddersfield and Lockwood and the colliery at Damside Road.
Although some of it remains, much of the housing from that time has been demolished and replaced and housing has been extended along the hillside towards Stile Common and Newsome Cross.
Despite the area growing, facilities in the village have greatly diminished. Primrose Hill used to have Anglican, Methodist and Baptist Churches, a Co-op, post office, up to four pubs and a Primrose Hill Conservative Club. A school was adjacent to the village at Stile Common. None of those facilities remain, although the Methodist church building was put to new use by the Church of God of Prophecy.
The village had a proud cricket team, Primrose Hill Cricket Club, which was formed in 1875 and which played at a ground at Cross Lane next to what was then The Crimea pub. The club came to an end in 2008 and the former cricket ground is now a football ground for Newsome FC.
Primrose Hill has a recreation ground near the end of Greenwood Street and Orchard Terrace. A path crosses the recreation ground to a long flight of steps to the river footbridge at Damside Road, providing the quickest route between Primrose Hill and the town centre on foot.
