The area extends from the A62 Manchester Road in the Colne Valley, near to the Paddock Viaduct, up the hillside towards Rashcliffe and Yews Hill.
Little of this area existed before the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries except for the Thornton Lodge hall, a building which still stands between Thomas Street and Brook Street, and which more recently saw use as an Islamia Girls High School.
The area was developed to support the housing need of a growing Huddersfield and since that time the original housing has been improved and newer housing added into gaps in the streetscape while retaining a smart recreational area. New shops and small businesses have also developed in the area.
Thornton Lodge has a modern Community Centre in Brook Street.

The area has a broad range of community shops including drapery and fabrics, Asian fashions, a goldsmith, groceries and mini-supermarket, halal butcher, bakery, confectioner and also property letting, travel and money transfer agents. Most of the shops are in Manchester Road and Thornton Lodge Road, but there also a few at various locations around the area. There are also vehicle repair garages in the area.
Jamia Masjid Noor is at the corner of Thornton Lodge Road and Crosland Road.
