Wakefield Road, WaterlooWaterloo from Round HillWaterloo is a district of Huddersfield about 2 miles east of the town centre.

The area is at the junction where Penistone Road branches from Wakefield Road. Wakefield Road crosses Fenay Beck via Waterloo Bridge, named after the famous battle of 1812, into the neighbouring district of Tandem.

The area is mostly residential but there are some small business premises in the area. For many years Waterloo has been the location of a bus garage in Penistone Road used over the years by Yorkshire Traction, the Huddersfield Bus Company, Yorkshire Tiger and now Team Pennine.

Originally part of the wider 'township' area of Dalton there was little but the bridge, the Waterloo Inn (now Tavern) and fields between the small hamlet of Greenside and the mills of Tandem until the 1900s.

A landmark between Waterloo and Dalton is Round Hill, a round hill surrounded by trees, the flat top of which was filled with housing in the mid-20th century.

Around Waterloo

Waterloo has shops at both sides of Wakefield Road near to the junction of Penistone Road. These include a baker's shop, florist, tools and hardware shop, carpet store, bookmakers, estate agents, hairdressers, nails and physiotherapy outlets, an optician and a car dealer. Morrisons also have a supermarket accessed from Penny Lane, off Wakefield Road, Waterloo.

There is a pharmacy at the Waterloo Health Centre at Wakefield Road.

The area has a fish and chip shop, chinese, asian and pizza takeaways and a sandwich shop.

The Waterloo Tavern is in Wakefield Road.
Waterloo Bowling Club has a lounge, tap room and concert room.

Waterloo Bowling Club is off Wakefield Road at Waterloo. It has several crown green bowling teams and organises bowling matches and tournaments between March and October.

Waterloo Bridge carries the A642 Wakefield Road over Fenay Beck between Waterloo and Tandem.
