Wooldale

Wooldale Road, WooldaleWooldaleWooldale is a village about 5 miles south of Huddersfield (6 miles by road) and about one mile north east of Holmfirth.

Wooldale occupies a hilltop position on the eastern side of the Holme Valley on an old route between Holmfirth and New Mill, the centre of the village being bypassed by the present A635 New Mill Road.

Quaker Meeting House, WooldaleWhile Wooldale is an old village and the centre of one of the old 'townships' of the Holme Valley, it has expanded with much new development around its edges since the latter part of the 20th century.

Quakerism came to Wooldale in the 1650s. The Grade II listed meeting house at Pell Lane in the village originally dates from the late 17th century and was repaired and enlarged to its present size in 1783.

Wooldale is the headquarters of the Wooldale Co-operative Society, a small member-owned retail co-operative society founded in 1886 which runs the village store in Wooldale Road, Wooldale and also village stores in nearby Thongsbridge and New Mill.

Wooldale Community Association runs the Wooldale Community Centre in a former school building at Robert Lane, which offers a venue for a host of activities, including dancing classes, pilates, yoga, cheerleading and drawing classes and fundraising fairs.  Wooldale Community Association website

Road travel

The village, which has many narrow roads, is reached from Holmfirth or New Mill off the A635 New Mill Road which skirts around the edge of Wooldale and divides it from the neighbouring village of Thongsbridge.
