It is also the centre of a civil parish covering Holmfirth and several neighbouring villages and hamlets run by Holme Valley Parish Council within the Kirklees metropolitan district.
Holmfirth was the principal location of TV's longest-run comedy series "Last Of The Summer Wine" and tourists visiting the town still head for Sid's Cafe, Nora Batty's steps or take a scenic trip around some of the other famous locations.
Holmfirth was first famous for film-making much earlier than this. Back in the early 1900s, even before Hollywood, Bamforth & Co were behind pioneering film-making work, but later became better known for their saucy seaside postcards.

An annual charity Duck Race has also been a feature of the town for more than 35 years. Hundreds of plastic ducks are poured into the River Holme in the town for the race downstream to the Sands Recreation Ground.
Holmfirth has a Tourist Information Centre at the library at Huddersfield Road.

The tremendous scenery of the area continues to be placed under pressure with an increase in house-building, often providing homes for people who wish to commute to other towns and cities to work.

A former car showroom with access from Huddersfield Road and Hollowgate was the location of Holmfirth's indoor market, but this has recently been closed and the market relocated outdoors at a temporary location at School Street, Crown Bottom, on Thursday and Saturday mornings. Supermarkets are represented by a large Co-operative, Lidl and a Sainsbury's Local.
Pharmacies can be found in Huddersfield Road in the centre of Holmfirth and at the Elmwood Health Centre.
Holmfirth Post Office at Station Road is accessed from the Towngate car park. There is also a sub-post office at Holmfirth Garage in Huddersfield Road.
A bank operates a part-time branch at Holmfirth Tech, Huddersfield Road.
A variety of pubs and bars can be found around the town centre.
Places to eat around the town include pubs, restaurants, tea and coffee shops, some of these at famous TV locations.
Holmfirth Library and information centre is in Huddersfield Road in the town centre.
Holmfirth Civic Hall at Huddersfield Road offers a popular venue for shows, choral concerts and exhibitions.
Holmfirth Pool and Fitness Centre, which is run by Kirklees Active Leisure, is off Huddersfield Road near to Sands Recreation Ground.
Holy Trinity Church is at Towngate in the centre of Holmfirth.
Holmfirth Methodist Church is in School Street, Holmfirth.
Victoria Park on the hillside behind the council offices and library in Huddersfield Road offers views across the town.
Holmfirth has public conveniences at Towngate, near to the bus station.
The River Holme flows through Holmfirth, where it is joined by the River Ribble.
