Huddersfield among top 10 for jobs growth January 28, 2019

Huddersfield is among the national top ten for private sector jobs growth, according to the Cities Outlook 2019 report just published, but the report also highlights how cities and major towns have been hit by recent austerity cuts in local government spending.

The study was carried out by leading think-tank on cities, Centre for Cities, which compares Britain's 63 largest cities and city-sized towns, looking at issues including local government spending, jobs and housing. The jobs growth figures were based on a comparison between 2016 and 2017 and may not reflect any recent job losses in sectors such as retail.

Six other Yorkshire cities and major towns are also in the British cities jobs growth top 10 in which Huddersfield is in 9th place. However, Huddersfield was close to the bottom of the table in 60th place out of the 63 when it comes to weekly earnings and it had a similar ranking for its 13.1% percentage of residents with no formal qualifications.

The Cities Outlook 2019 report stresses the importance commuting links play in Britain's best performing cities but points to cities in the north of England having been hardest hit by Government austerity measures which have particularly hit local government spending.

Huddersfield is shown to have had local government spending cuts of 23% over the past 10 years. Not quite as bad as West Yorkshire neighbour Wakefield at 30.6% but considerably worse than Bradford, which had a 16.2% cut in total expenditure, and around double the spending cut of Leeds, where the drop of 12.2% was less than the 14.3% national average. Barnsley, South Yorkshire, had the highest cuts in the country, also nearly double those of its neighbour Sheffield at 22%.
