Alterations to former Co-op building taking shape December 24, 2020
The former Co-op's department store extension of 1936, which has been empty for many years, is undergoing extensive rebuilding work incorporating the original 1930s stone facade into a much taller student accommodation building.
The height of the building is being extended by three storeys as part of the redevelopment which will create 135 student bedrooms in 75 apartments.
The department store extension of the 1930s was part of a gradual expansion of the Huddersfield Co-op store along what was then Buxton Road, now a pedestrianised part of New Street.
The first Co-op store was opened in 1860 with a new store building created in the late 1880s. A dome section of the building was added in the 1890s and the clock tower built around 1905.
The original Co-op building adjacent to the development site now houses a Wilko store and there is no Co-op within Huddersfield town centre.
