Kirklees Council remains with no overall control but Reform UK wipe out Labour May 8, 2026


With all votes now counted for the 69 seats on Kirklees Council, the authority remains with no overall control but with a make-up very different from before with no Labour councillors and 29 Reform UK members. Reform UK is now the largest party on the council.

There were also big gains for the Green Party who increased their number of seats from 4 to 12.

Reform UK will occupy most seats at Huddersfield Town HallVoting took place on Thursday May 7 in local elections including the election of all seats of Kirklees Council after a review of ward boundaries.

The comparison below is the situation before the 2026 election, that differing from the position after the 2024 election. Several councillors left Labour after that election to sit as Community Alliance or as Independent councillors, but Labour remained the largest party.

The annual council meeting is due to take place on Wednesday May 20 at which the mayor and deputy mayor are elected and members appointed to the various committees involved in running the council.
