ELECTIONS 2021 RESULTS
Voting in the Kirklees Council elections on Thursday May 6 saw few surprises and little change with the council remaining with no overall control and Labour as the largest party. There was also the first-ever election of a Mayor of West Yorkshire, the last and largest metropolitan county of the UK that the Government has placed under the control of one mayor.
Batley and Spen Labour and Co-operative MP Tracy Brabin was elected. Her new role will mean her relinquishing her position as MP with a by-election to take place in Batley and Spen.
Among the few changes in the Kirklees Council election the Conservatives did pick up two seats, one from the Liberal Democrats and one from Labour. Lindley, traditionally a closely-fought seat but where Liberal Demorats held all three places in recent years, was one of the places where this time the Conservatives gained the edge. The Conservatives also gained a Denby Dale seat from Labour.
The composition of the council is now Labour 29 and Labour and Co-operative 4, Conservative 19, Liberal Democrats 9, Green Party 3, Holme Valley Independents 3 and Independent 2.
Locally the voting involved the election of one of the three councillors in each ward of Kirklees Council, although two councillors were elected in the Birstall and Birkenshaw ward and in the Golcar ward, where each ward had been carrying a vacancy.
There were also parish council elections in two Holme Valley Parish Council wards - Holmfirth Central and Upperthong - where the Labour candidate won in Holmfirth Central and Conservative in Upperthong.
Turnouts in the Kirklees Council election varied from around 31% to 46% across council wards. Voters in Holme Valley South ward have been the keenest to vote while the Dalton ward has seen the least number of people voting.
