Huddersfield town centre reaches UK No1 for spending recovery May 13, 2021

Extra space to eat food has been provided under canopies in New Street, HuddersfieldThe High Street Recovery Tracker published by research institute Centre for Cities on May 13 put Huddersfield at number 1 in the UK for post-lockdown spending recovery.

The tracker looked at consumer spending following the April lifting of lockdown restrictions and Huddersfield came out in top place across cities and large towns across the entire country with spending at 119% of lockdown levels.

A clothes shop queue in Huddersfield after reopening in AprilPavement cafes have become a feature of the townThe Centre for Cities says the vaccination programme and lifting of lockdown is helping businesses get back on their feet with many cities and towns, particularly those in northern England and the Midlands, seeing a boom in consumer spending.

It also reports that the centres of the biggest cities remain much quieter places where people need encouragement to return.

Two other Yorkshire centres were in the UK top 10 for spending at the same time: Middlesbrough was 6th at 115% and Wakefield was 10th at 112%.

Meanwhile Leeds was 8th from the foot of a separate Bottom 10 chart for footfall with a 20% rate. London was bottom at 15%.

By the end of May, Huddersfield had slipped a little to 8th place for spending as tourist hot-spots started to regain position, including York in 4th place.
