Town confirm relegation to League One as Ipswich seal promotion to Premier League May 4, 2024

Huddersfield Town lost their final game of the season away at promotion-chasing Ipswich Town by 2-0 on Saturday May 4 — their last Championship game for a while as it confirmed their relegation to League One football next season.

Town finish in 23rd place in the Championship with 45 points. Joining them on the journey down will be bottom-of-table Rotherham United and Birmingham City. The Ipswich win made sure of their automatic promotion in second place, a point behind Championship winners Leicester City.

Ten of the 12 seasons since Town were last in League One have been spent in the Championship and two seasons — between 2017 and 2019 — in the Premier League.

Town’s high tally of draws, most of them score-draws, must have made them one of the favourites of Football Pools players this season. The 18 draws was beaten throughout the football leagues only by Charlton Athletic with 20 draws in League One, where they finished 16th. Unlike Charlton, who Town will meet next season, Town’s tally of draws is beaten by their tally of lost games. And unlike Charlton, Town’s goal difference is minus 29 compared with Charlton’s minus one.

It has been another season of managerial turmoil for Town with four in charge since their Championship season began last August. The season started with veteran Neil Warnock, who saved the club from relegation last season. When he left in September he was replaced by Darren Moore, who led nearly half of Town’s games this season before he was relieved of his duties at the end of January. Huddersfield Town Academy Manager Jon Worthington stepped up for four games, including two of just nine wins this season, before the club decided to appoint André Breitenreiter as head coach, achieving two wins from 13 games.
