Transport Minister also commits to West Yorkshire Mass Transit

Huddersfield stationFour-tracking and electrification on the present main trans-Pennine route will continueThe main trans-Pennine rail route will continue to be via the existing line from Leeds to Manchester via Dewsbury and Huddersfield it was announced by the Government on Thursday November 18, 2021.

There are already plans for new fast tracks alongside tracks for stopping services and for electrification between Dewsbury and Huddersfield. It has now been announced that from Marsden the line will join new tracks to Manchester and Warrington with journeys continuing to Liverpool.

The news came as a section of the Northern Powerhouse Rail scheme — a new high-speed route from Leeds to Bradford then somehow tunnelling its way on the 30 miles through the Pennines to Manchester — were dropped by the Government. The Government instead announced £96bn of upgrades aimed at a more integrated rail network for the North.

The eastern leg of HS2 which would have linked Leeds to Birmingham and London has also been dropped, but the East Coast mail line will be upgraded and Transport Minister Grant Shapps also committed to a West Yorkshire Mass Transit System as part of his Integrated Rail Plan announcement.
