Library closes its doors on New Year's Eve December 31, 2022

Huddersfield LibraryHuddersfield Library is moving to a temporary location as part of plans to redevelop the Piazza area of Huddersfield town centre.

The library will be moving away from Princess Alexandra Walk and then back again once a new building is complete.

The present Grade II-listed Library and Art Gallery building, built in 1937 and in use since 1940, closes its doors to the public at noon on New Year's Eve.

A new library will be added to the part of present Market Hall building that is to be retained next to a large public square. The library will form the first stage of the Cultural Heart programme for the town and is expected to be complete by Spring 2026.

In the meantime, the library will be relocated at the Kirklees Customer Service Centre building in Market Street.

Kirklees has plans to reuse the present library building as a museum after an extension has been added at the rear of the building, facing what are now shops between The Shambles and Victoria Lane. These are planned to be demolished to create part of an new town park.
