Countryside fire reminder after big blaze February 27, 2019

Firefighters are reminding people to take care not to start fires in the countryside after crews worked through Tuesday night (February 26) and Wednesday to put out one of the biggest moorland fires seen in West Yorkshire in recent years. The blaze spread across Pennine moorland high above Marsden.

Fire spread for several miles across the unseasonally dry moorland of Close Moss on the approach to Standedge, fanned by a breeze after another day of record high February temperatures.

Barbecues, dropped cigarettes and rubbish such as glass bottles are easily preventable causes of moorland fires.
