Firefighters urge people to 'Be Moor Aware' March 24, 2022

The fire on the north side of Pule Hill above MarsdenWith the first signs of Spring-like sunshine, fires have again broken out on moorland above Marsden.

On Friday March 18 there was a fire on the north side of Pule Hill and on Wednesday night (March 23) there was a blaze near Cupwith Reservoir.

Firefighters are again reminding people to 'Be Moor Aware' and take care not to start fires in the countryside.

Barbecues, dropped cigarettes and rubbish such as glass bottles are easily preventable causes of moorland fires.

Three years ago several miles of ground vegetation and wildlife were destroyed in a February fire across part of the National Trust Marsden Moor Estate at the edge of the Peak District National Park and only recently a 28-year-old man received a jail sentence for starting with a firework a 2021 Marsden Moor fire that needed 100 firefighters to tackle it.

Just before the most recent fires, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service worked with partners including Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and the National Trust in a day of wildfire training on Wednesday March 17, testing new equipment on moorland near Slaithwaite.
