Multi-storey car park closed February 7, 2020

The Queensgate multi-storey car parkThe Queensgate multi-storey car park in Huddersfield closed for an indefinite period on February 7 and remains closed.

Kirklees Council announced the closure of the car park, off Alfred Street in the town centre, to find out more about its condition after routine inspections highlighted deterioration of the structure.

A recent Kirklees Council blueprint for the next 10 years showed in the background of its illustrations a massive tower block built on the site at least 10 storeys higher than the roof of the present four-storey car park, a height easily overshadowing the nearby Town Hall. In the consultation document there was little explanation of the building other than: "There are a number of opportunities here which include new parking, a hotel or a youth zone."
