New trains arrive for Northern services August 4, 2019

New Class 195 diesel trains alongside a soon-to-be-retired Pacer at HuddersfieldNew diesel versions of 101 new trains being introduced by Northern are now in operation in West Yorkshire.

The electric powered version of the train (Class 331) was introduced last month on services between Leeds and Doncaster, but now there also diesel versions (Class 195) of the train operating on lines that have not been electrified. Two three-car diesel units are pictured in the siding in Huddersfield alongside one of the bus-based Pacer trains of the 1980s which are due to be retired by the end of the year.

Northern's new train in HuddersfieldOver half of the 101 trains will be diesel powered units formed into two-car and three-car sets and the others will be the electric powered units in three-car or four-car sets. Further trains will be introduced through 2019 and into 2020. They had initially been expected last year.

The new trains are being built in Spain and Wales by Spanish company CAF and have streamlined non-connecting fronts and longer carriages with some table seats. They also have wifi, air conditioning and three-pin electric sockets, accessible wheelchair spaces, more modern toilets, information screens and clearly audible announcements.
