The John Smith's Stadium in Huddersfield was to host a quarter-final matchThe Rugby League World Cup, which was originally due to feature a quarter-final match in Huddersfield in November, has been postponed until 2022.

The competition was originally due to start on October 23 this year, but the postponement decision announced on August 5 followed the withdrawal of Australia and New Zealand from the competition amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

Huddersfield, the birthplace of Rugby League, was due to host one men's quarter-final match of the competition. Either or both of the antipodean teams might have visited Huddersfield, which was to pitch the Group B winner against Group C runner-up.

Other Yorkshire stadiums were also to play a big part in the tournament with games planned at Doncaster, Hull, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Sheffield and York.

Elland Road, in Leeds, was to host a men's semi-final, the other being held at The Emirates Stadium, in London, with finals of both men's and women's competitions planned at Old Trafford, in Manchester.

Host towns and cities for teams from 21 nations also feature Yorkshire playing a big part, although Huddersfield was not named as a team base.

The competition will now be held in 2022, between Saturday October 15 and Saturday November 19.
