Appeal after more moors fires April 24, 2019

One of this week's fires affects moorland at Deer Hill near Marsden The National Trust has launched a public appeal to help regenerate fire ravaged moors after more than 5 square miles of its Marsden Moor estate were devastated in fires this week. Large areas had already been hit by blazes earlier in the year, which unusually started as early as February.

The fire in FebruarySeveral moorland areas have been affected by fires with new fires breaking out on Wednesday at Deer Hill and Binn Moor after an earlier fire which started on Sunday evening near Eastergate. A helicopter has been used to drop water to help firefighters tackle the blaze and some roads have been closed because of the fires. This week's blazes follow the earlier large fires in February which spread across moorland near Redbrook Clough.

The moors are a natural habitat for many species, including short eared owls, curlews and mountain hares.

The charity is appealing for support via its website to help restore the moorland.
