2021 Census shows rising population in Kirklees June 28, 2022

First results from the 2021 Census, which have only recently been published by the Government's Office for National Statistics, show the population of Kirklees has risen by 2.6% in the ten years since the 2011 Census.

The Census showed there were 433,300 people living in Kirklees on census day in 2021, up from 422,500, ten years earlier.

Kirklees continues to have the fourth highest population of all districts across Yorkshire after Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford.

Across the whole of England the only other metropolitan authorities with a higher population are Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. Including unitary authorities, the population of Bristol is also marginally higher (also the bulk-of-former-county unitary authorities of Durham and Cornwall).

Places in Yorkshire with the biggest percentage rise in population over the ten years were Selby in North Yorkshire at 10.2%, then neighbouring Wakefield at 8.4% and Leeds at 8.1%.

While the 2.6% rise in population in Kirklees is below the 6.6% average rise for England, Kirklees continues to have one of Yorkshire's highest population densities, despite its vast moorland areas, deep valleys and areas within the Peak District National Park. The 1,061 people per square kilometre in Kirklees is less than only Kingston upon Hull, Middlesbrough, Sheffield, Bradford and Leeds among districts in Yorkshire and is 86.8% higher than neighbouring Calderdale, 1.7% higher than neighbouring Wakefield and 42.8% higher than South Yorkshire neighbour Barnsley.

Kirklees has a split of about 51% female population and 49% male population, matching the situation nationally.
