Rashcliffe

The Anglican St Stephen's Church closed in 2013Markazi Jamia Masjid GhausiaRashcliffe is a district of Huddersfield adjoining Lockwood and Thornton Lodge just under a mile south west of Huddersfield town centre.

The original area of Rashcliffe was built up in the Victorian era with high density houses at either side of Rashcliffe Hill Road. The road led from Folly Hall, just below Chapel Hill, in Huddersfield, towards Crosland Moor, going up the ridge of the hill seperating the Holme and Colne Valleys. Around that area was a high concentration of textile mills.

The church for the parish, which also included the Thornton Lodge area, its school and further housing were built on the floor of the Holme Valley off the road leading towards an also-expanding Lockwood. There was also one street, Hope Street, at the St Thomas's Road side of the hill.

Hope Street and the lower part of Rashcliffe Hill Road have long disappeared, not only the early housing, but also the blocks of flats that later replaced them in the mid 20th century. Hope Street has more recently been replaced with Cathedral House, the home of Huddersfield Christian Fellowship.

At the Rashcliffe end of Lockwood Road a lot of the original housing was also demolished and the area has seen sheltered housing and retirement homes built there and business units created and only the later and larger Victorian housing remaining. This remaining area of Rashcliffe runs directly into Lockwood and it is often difficult these days to distinguish it from its larger neighbour.

Former school buildings have been preserved with new uses, one having been extended as a mosque.

The attractive grade II listed St Stephen Church, built in 1864, was closed in 2013 and its building put up for sale. Its parish, like those of churches at Primrose Hill and Lockwood which closed much earlier, was combined with a parish then based in Newsome — part of the Emmanuel Benefice with churches also at Armitage Bridge and at South Crosland. There are still other churches that are part of other parishes which are closer and, for some, possibly easier to get to.
