TransPennine Express took over the route previously operated by Northern between Huddersfield and Castleford from the December 2023 timetable, successfully extending it following improvements at Castleford station to provide direct services between the Wakefield district and Manchester and the Wakefield district and York.

TransPennine Express operate the service via Wakefield to YorkThere is now a regular hourly service including evenings and Sundays along the full route between Manchester Piccadilly and York.

The service considerably improves east-west journey times to and from the stations in the Wakefield district. It also provides more cross-town journey opportunities in the Huddersfield area between Mirfield, Slaithwaite and Marsden.

It also provided a more frequent service at Deighton, but Deighton is now temporarily closed until a new station opens in 2027 and has only a bus replacement service between Huddersfield, Deighton and Brighouse.

With nearly all Northern stopping services between Huddersfield and Leeds via Mirfield diverted until new platforms are created at Huddersfield, this hourly train is currently the only regular service between Huddersfield and Mirfield.

For journeys from Huddersfield as far as York the journey takes around 57 minutes. The additional stops mean that is just a few minutes longer than express journeys via Leeds, but the trains can offer less-crowded journeys between Huddersfield and York at peak times than services operating via Leeds, which are also sometimes more susceptible to delay.

From Huddersfield to Wakefield Kirkgate the journey time is 20 minutes which is considerably faster than bus journeys from Huddersfield to Wakefield which take about an hour-and-a-quarter.

The service can be the starting point for some of the fastest journeys from Huddersfield to London, though they involve two changes, from this service at Wakefield Kirkgate to the Northern train to Wakefield Westgate to catch the LNER service to London there. Such journeys take around 2hr 41min from Huddersfield to London.

During work on the TransPennine Route Upgrade, this service generally remains operational when engineering work is taking place between Ravensthorpe and Leeds or between Leeds and Church Fenton, but has a bus replacement service from Huddersfield via Deighton, Mirfield, an additional stop at Dewsbury then to trains at Wakefield Kirkgate when engineering work is taking place at Huddersfield or at Mirfield, where there will be engineering at Christmas 2025.

PLEASE NOTE: This travel study is provided for basic guidance and principally indicates the general daytime pattern of Monday to Saturday trains. We recommend checking your route on journey planners before travelling, particularly in the evening and on Sundays or when services are disrupted by engineering work or strikes.
