Wilshaw
Much of Wilshaw was created in the mid 19th century under the influence of one man, Joseph Hirst, who from small beginnings became a highly respected woollen manufacturer and entrepreneur.
His first development was Wilshaw Villa, which later became the vicarage. On the site of Wilshaw Farm, he created a warehouse and weaving room and he built cottages for his workers. When his daughter died in 1859, he funded a church at Wilshaw, an unusual design, built in 1863 by architect John Kirk of Huddersfield. Over the next ten years Joseph Hirst also oversaw the building of almshouses, a school and schoolmaster's house.
Wilshaw has 15 listed buildings, including the Hirst family mausoleum. The Victorian area of the hamlet is a conservation area.
