A few Sunday services do not stop at Wombwell, Elsecar and Chapeltown.
Some Sunday services continue after Sheffield to Lincoln (via Kiveton Bridge, Kiveton Park, Shireoaks, Worksop, Retford, Gainsborough Lea Road and Saxilby).

Stocksmoor stationShepley stationDenby Dale ViaductThe scenic Penistone Line visits many villages and passes through picturesque countryside on its route between Huddersfield in West Yorkshire and Penistone, Barnsley and Sheffield in South Yorkshire.

The line, operated by Northern, provides the only regular public transport link from Huddersfield to those towns and the city of Sheffield. It also serves as a busy commuter railway for some of the many large villages in the hinterland of Huddersfield, spread over more than nine miles between Huddersfield and Denby Dale.

Denby Dale stationDenby Dale is the last station in West Yorkshire and the boundary for rail tickets valid across West Yorkshire. (It is also the extended boundary for tickets for travel in South Yorkshire.)

The full journey from Huddersfield to Sheffield takes around 1hr 16mins, reflecting the 17 station stops and somewhat meandering route, but this remains the fastest available on the rail routes that are still open to Sheffield, just 22 miles away as the crow flies.

There is generally an hourly service from Huddersfield on Mondays to Saturdays. An extra evening peak service withdrawn in the December 2023 to June 2024 timetable has not been reinstated in the new timetable from June.

Sunday also has an hourly service after a later start, but with no late evening trains. Some Sunday trains do not stop at Wombwell, Elsecar and Chapeltown and some Sunday trains continue from Sheffield via stations to Lincoln.

The new timetable from 2 June 2024 runs until 6 October 2024, when another timetable is usually published to cover the period until December with slightly slower journey times because of leaf fall on the line.

The first two weekends (June 1-2 and June 8-9) will not be fully operating to the new timetable because of the closure of Huddersfield station as part of the TransPennine Route Upgrade. Trains will operate to Lockwood with buses into Huddersfield.

A community rail partnership promotes the Penistone Line (see link to their website below).

PLEASE NOTE: This travel study is provided for basic guidance and indicates the general daytime pattern of Monday to Saturday trains. We recommend checking your route on journey planners before travelling, particularly in the evening and on Sundays or when services are disrupted by engineering work or strikes.
