Colne Bridge

Dalton Bank Road, Colne BridgeRiver Colne, Colne BridgeColne Bridge is a hamlet beside the River Colne about 3.5 miles north-east of Huddersfield town centre.

The earliest bridge in Colne Bridge spanned the River Colne as the name suggests, but there are now a chain of bridges on the B6118 road leading from Bradley towards Grange Moor. These also take it across the railway and Huddersfield Broad Canal.

There is also an old 15-arch railway viaduct spanning the Huddersfield Broad Canal and River Colne between Bradley and Colne Bridge. It was built for a Midland Railway goods line between its line at Mirfield and its goods yard in Huddersfield, but the section across the viaduct was closed to rail traffic in 1937. It can still be crossed as it now carries part of the Calder Valley Greenway cycle route providing a short cut for cyclists heading from the Huddersfield area towards Mirfield.

Some of the housing which existed in Colne Bridge near the river has been cleared over the years but there are now attractive riverside walks.

A major addition to the Colne Bridge area in recent years has been the headquarters of a major maternity and baby product retail chain founded in 1981.

Civil parish council

Part of the area to the east of the River Colne bridge, including most of Bog Green Lane but excluding Dalton Bank Road, is in the Kirkheaton ward of the civil parish run by Kirkburton Parish Council. The Huddersfield.guide map shows this boundary.

Colne Bridge to the east of the River Colne bridge is in the Dalton ward of the Kirklees metropolitan district. Areas to the Bradley side of this bridge are in the Ashbrow ward.
