Marsden Moor

Buckstones and Pule HillWessenden Moor, Marsden Moor EstateClose Gate packhorse bridgeThe Marsden Moor Estate is a vast and beautiful expanse of moorland managed by The National Trust.

It surrounds the village of Marsden, about six miles south west of Huddersfield town centre.

The area is partly within the Peak District National Park and also extends northwards from its boundary.

The estate of more than 5,500 acres contains a number of unenclosed moors which are crossed by more than 100 miles of footpaths, historic transport routes across the Pennines and some wild walking terrain.

The Pennine Way long distance hike between Derbyshire and Scotland crosses the estate, which is also the catchment area above the Yorkshire Water reservoirs built in the Wessenden Valley in the 1890s by the Huddersfield Corporation.
The area is a Site of Special Scientic Interest and a habitat for a huge variety of wildlife.

Highlights of the estate include

• The Close Gate pack horse bridge and nearby Eastergate

• The scenic Wessenden Valley with its reservoirs

• The rocky outcrops at Buckstones, which is also a popular venue for paragliding and hang-gliding

• Pule Hill, where there are rock climbing routes and one of the stones of the Stanza Stones poetry trail featuring poems created by Marsden poet Simon Armitage, who became Poet Laureate in 2019.
