The small district grew around an important crossing point of the River Colne. Manchester Road also crosses the Huddersfield Narrow canal here.
Paddock Viaduct, carrying the Huddersfield-Penistone-Sheffield line, and the tall spire of St Thomas's Church are dominant features of the area.
Longroyd Bridge was once the location of the town's tramway and later bus depot, although the building has since been reused.

Road travel
Heading from the town centre, following signs towards Oldham, the A62Manchester Road soon arrives at Longroyd Bridge. Here Longroyd Lane branches off, leading beneath the railway viaduct into Paddock.
