Newsome
Church Lane, NewsomeSt John the Evangalist Church, NewsomeKing's Bridge and Newsome RoadCastle Hill above NewsomeNewsome is a large village district about 1 mile south of Huddersfield which has seen expansion into several neighbouring hamlets in recent years.
The village, reached from the town centre via King's Bridge and Newsome Road, lies at the crest of a hillside above the Holme Valley but beneath Castle Hill, which overlooks the area.
Newsome Mill with its distinctive clock tower was an iconic feature of the village and could be seen from across Huddersfield. While there had been calls for its refurbishment, the derelict grade II-listed four-storey building, sadly suffered a devastating fire on the morning of November 17, 2016 and only its clock tower, gateway and some ground floor walls now remain. It had been last used as a mill in 1983. Pictures of the mill appear on our Memories of the mill page.
The village centre is at Church Lane at the top of the steep Lockwood Scar.
St John the Evangalist Church, dating from 1872, is just across the busy Newsome Road from the village shops. The church has recently ceased holding regular services, but there are hopes that the church building can be transferred to community use.
The village offers an attractive calling or starting point for a variety of walking routes to Castle Hill.

The hill is thought to have been occupied as long as 5,000 years ago in the Neolithic period while its earliest defensive earthworks were created in the early Iron Age around 2,700 years ago. The Victoria Tower was opened in 1899 commemorating the diamond jubilee year of Queen Victoria two years earlier. For a small fee its internal steps can be climbed on selected dates.
