Armitage Bridge
Since the end of the 18th century, life in Armitage Bridge has centred on its dominant Brooke's Mill and many of its houses were built as cottages for the mill workers.
The mill's history dates back to 1798, when it became the base for wool cloth manufacturing for a family business founded in 1541. John Brooke and Sons Ltd used the mill as a centre of woollen cloth making for nearly 200 years until manufacturing came to an end there in 1987. The heritage buildings have since offered space to a wide range of businesses, including a film studio company. There are also plans to develop more residential usage of the buildings.
The film studios have been used for many TV programmes and commercials since 1999. They were the main production base for ITV's Where The Heart Is until 2006 and more recently have been used for ITV period drama Jericho and scenes for the BBC's Happy Valley.
Just across the River Holme from the mill is St Paul's Church. The church was built in 1848 and was provided with a more modern and versatile interior after a major fire in 1987. The church has a team of bell ringers.
The village does not have a pub, but the Armitage Bridge Club, also known as The Monkey Club, normally provides a lively social scene. The village also has a cricket club in the Drakes Huddersfield Cricket League.
