A residential campus used by students of the University of Huddersfield is situated on the site of a former psychiatric hospital at Storthes Hall Park.
All Hallows Church, Kirkburton, serves both Highburton and Kirkburton and is a grade I listed building. The present building mostly dates from the 13th century with alterations in the 19th century but there is record of a building there in 12th century and some of the stonework from that time still exists. A 10th century Anglican cross takes the church's history back to pre-Norman times.
For nearly 100 years, Kirkburton was the terminus of a railway branch line. The line was opened in 1867, branching from Deighton via stations at Kirkheaton and Lepton and Fenay Bridge. Most of the track was removed in 1966. Passenger services had ceased in 1930, but it was used after then for freight. A mile-long stretch of the line at Deighton remained until 1971 serving what was then the ICI chemical works.
