The railway runs via Skelmanthorpe to Clayton West along the route of an old branch from the Huddersfield-Penistone-Sheffield line at Shelley which survived the Beeching axe of the 1960s but eventually closed to passengers in 1983. Although the KLR station is adjacent to the main railway, there is no station for the Penistone line. Shepley station is about 20 minutes walk away.
