Housing development of recent decades now occupies much of the hillside high above Shepley Beck with many of the older parts of this scattered village being at the top of the hill and around Far Bank.

Among the older premises around the village are a number of listed buildings. Shelley Methodist Church, at Far Bank, is one of the oldest surviving buildings, dating from 1785, although with later additions from the mid 19th century. Methodism founder John Wesley preached there in 1788.

Travel

Shelley station

Shelley has a station, off Copley Lane, on the Kirklees Light Railway. The railway runs via Skelmanthorpe to Clayton West along the route of an old branch from the Huddersfield-Penistone-Sheffield line at Shelley which survived the Beeching axe of the 1960s but eventually closed to passengers in 1983. Although the KLR station is adjacent to the main railway, there is no station for the Penistone line. Shepley station is about 20 minutes walk away.
