LeptonChimney Lane, LeptonLeptonLepton is a village around 4 miles east-south-east of Huddersfield town centre high on the hillside on the eastern side of the valley of Fenay Beck.

While now largely a dormitory village, Lepton originally grew around industries including cloth-weaving, coal-mining, farming, a brickworks and firework-making.

Lepton is surrounded mostly by agricultural land with Lepton Great Wood to the south.

Around Lepton

Although there are various shops dotted around Lepton, the village centre is in modern buildings around The Square at Highgate Lane with shops extending along Highgate Lane towards The Sun Inn. They include a bakery, newsagent, hairdresser, Co-operative food store and a funeral home. There is also a Spar shop at a petrol filling station on the A642 Wakefield Road which by-passes the centre of Lepton.

The Sun Inn, Highgate Lane, Lepton The village has a pharmacy near the surgery in Highgate Lane.

Lepton post office is in Highgate Lane.

The Sun Inn at Highgate Lane is the village pub.

Lepton has a bar and restaurant at Wakefield Road near Lepton Edge, which also offers accommodation.

Lepton has takeaways selling fish and chips, Asian food, pizzas, curries and kebabs.

Lepton Highlanders is a sports and social club with a club house and sports fields at Wakefield Road near Lepton Edge offering football, cricket, darts and dominoes for juniors and adults.

Places to visit

National Coal Mining Museum for England

National Coal Mining Museum for EnglandThe National Coal Mining Museum for England is situated on the main A642 at Overton mid-way between Huddersfield and Wakefield. The museum is in the former Caphouse Colliery and has a wide range of exhibits reflecting the coal mining history of the Yorkshire coalfield and beyond and also offers an underground tour down the mine.

Road travel

The A642 Wakefield Road passes through the edge of Lepton. The B6433 Rowley Lane also passes through Lepton, linking the A642 with the A629 Penistone Road.
